About the BIU

Biomedicum Imaging Unit is a core facility that provides expertise and state-of-the-art equipment for modern multidimensional biomedical imaging applications. Currently available imaging systems and services include:

  • Advanced widefield fluorescence microscopy
  • Multichannel total internal reflection microscopy
  • Superresolution microscopy
  • Laser scanning confocal microscopy
  • Multiphoton microscopy
  • Coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering microscopy
  • High content microscopy
  • Optical projection tomography
  • Preclinical fluorescence and bioluminescence imaging
  • Wide selection of tools for image deconvolution, volume rendering, other post-processing and analysis

The services are available for all local, national, international and commercial customers. In 2016, BIU provided services to over 200 researchers from 79 research groups, corresponding to over 12,500 instrument hours.

BIU is housed and supported by the Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki. Additional financial support is received through Biocentrum Helsinki, Biocenter Finland Biological Imaging Technology Platform and Academy of Finland.

Together with Light Microscopy Unit at the Institute of Biotechnology (LMU) and the High Content Analysis unit at FIMM (FIMM-HCA), BIU forms the HELMI light microscopy platform of the Helsinki Institute of Life Sciences (HiLIFE). BIU is also part of the Finnish BioImaging consortium, National Imaging Infrastructure network of Biocenter Finland, European Light Microscopy Initiative, and a stakeholder of the ESFRI EuroBioImaging pan-European infrastructure project.
