Stem cell research is presently one of the most exciting areas of modern biology. Stem cells are the source of all tissues of the body. Harnessing the potential of these cells may make it possible to develop new treatments for many regenerative diseases by replacing cells that are lost or damaged in the disease process. We also need to dissect the molecular machinery governing stem cell functions to understand and target diseases such as cancer.
The primary mission of our lab is the discovery and validation of new mechanisms of stem cell self-renewal and differentiation. Understanding of these mechanisms at the molecular level will eventually lead to methods to change cells of one phenotype to another as a means of providing histocompatible cells for cell therapies, as well as to methods to inhibit cancer growth. To achieve this goal, we use innovative functional genomics methods to identify and functionally test genes and molecules that regulate stem cells, and evaluate their importance by using in vivo mouse models. We are currently especially interested in the mechanisms governing adult stem cell functions during angiogenesis and cancer growth. Another important novel venture is high throughput differentiation screening of established murine and human embryonic stem (ES) cell lines to analyze factors responsible for differentiation of ES cells to mature cell or tissue types of biomedical importance.
