Research in our laboratory deals with mechanisms of mitochondrial homeostasis and their role in human diseases. Mitochondria are a dynamic intracellular organelle integral for many cellular processes and disruptions in these functions can significantly compromise homeostasis leading to human disease. Very little is known about the molecular basis for coordinating mitochondrial function, particularly in a tissue-specific context. We address this scientific problem in mice and cultured cells from two different perspectives, genetic control of mitochondrial DNA and mitochondrial protein homeostasis. Our ultimate goal is to understand the mechanisms that coordinate mitochondrial function in normal and disease states.
