General introduction

Nordic Network on p53 and Cell Cycle Regulation is a meeting ground for research groups in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Estonia working on related subjects of p53 tumor suppressor gene functions, cell cycle regulation and their dysregulation in cancer. The expertise areas of the participating laboratories are overlapping and range from p53 activation studies, approached both by biochemical and biological models, to DNA damage-mediated activation mechanisms of p53, and cell cycle regulation pertaining eg. DNA damage checkpoints. As these are internationally highly competitive fields of the highest clinical significance, it is of vital importance to the Nordic research groups to develop strong points of interaction to provide competitive edge and new ways to approach the important problems. Activities include: Yearly research symposium, laboratory exchange visits and Network intranet and extranet. The Network is especially expected to benefit the graduate students and postdocs as it is designed as a platform for the students to present and discuss their work, including student exchange between the groups. The network now contains 22 participating groups with coordinating groups in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark. The designed Network is a continuum of four NorFa p53/Cell Cycle workshops held in 1999-2002.

The Network is funded by the Nordic Research Board (NordForsk).
