Research

Reproductive hormones in menopausal health Research Group has expertise in gynecology and internal medicine with strong research background in (in vivo and in vitro) health effects of sex steroids and postmenopausal hormone therapy (HT). The group has conducted multiple clinical studies, studies in animals, and experimental studies focusing on cardiovascular aspects of sex steroids and HT. For example, the group has shown that estradiol promotes beneficial effects by reducing monocyte adhesion and induces endothelium derived vasodilatory agents. In addition, transdermal HT is associated with favourable effects on cardiovascular risk factors suggesting that transdermal route could provide health benefits compared to traditional oral HT.

More recently, the Reproductive hormones in Menopausal Health Research Group has studied alternative treatment modalities such as tibolone, selective estrogen modulators (SERMs), and soy derived phytoestrogens. Tibolone, a synthetic steroid with estrogenic and progestogenic action, has neither adverse nor positive effect on progression of atherosclerosis. Furthermore, new SERMs and soy derived phytoestrogens (also called “natural SERMs”) may have beneficial health effects on lipid profile, but little or no effect on climacteric symptoms and therefore may not represent true alternatives to HT. Therefore, new studies comparing different new HT regimens and routes of application in recently menopausal women with severe climacteric symptoms are needed.
