Project Infection and Inflammation

The project Infection and Inflammation is part of the Women's Health Research Program in the University of Helsinki, Faculty of Medicine. The project is managed by Professor Jorma Paavonen,

The project consists of four range of research:

  • Human papillomavirus phase 3 efficacy trials have been extremely successful. The HPV research group enrolled approximately 7,000 young women in the 2 global efficacy trials. The results have been extremely convincing showing that the vaccines are 100% efficacious in preventing high grade cervical, vaginal or vulvar precancer in unexposed women. A community randomized Phase 4 HPV vaccine effectiveness trial has just started in Finland; our goal is to enroll 65,000 young women. Guidelines of vaccine implementation have just been produced.
  • A large clinical trail is ongoing of the development of better biomarkers for preterm birth.
  • An outpatient clinic for HIV positive women has been established 15 years ago and produces important information of contraception, reproductive health and morbidity of these women.
  • Registry linkages are effectively utilized in clinical epidemiologic research. For instance, we have reported that any surgical treatment of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia significantly increases the risk for preterm birth.
